Melbourne Animation Team work with Wild Things

Iloura would like to congratulate Warner Bros. Pictures, director Spike Jonze and associated producers on the release of the stunning feature film Where the Wild Things Are.

The Iloura VFX team is extremely proud to have been involved with this project, which from conception has been eagerly anticipated by a global fan base of millions.

"Iloura's involvement began with the shoot, prevising scenes and helping to develop the original character animation pipeline. As we were involved in the project early on we were able to engage with the puppets in a direct and tactile way, which gave us insights into the technical requirements of the animation process. This process would have been more difficult to complete had we not been on set. We have a very gifted team at Iloura and it was our great pleasure to assist Spike and Daniel realise their vision for this film".
Ineke Majoor, Head of VFX, Iloura

"Working with Iloura on Where The Wild Things Are has been a great pleasure. I can honestly say that they have gone beyond the call of duty when it came to really exploring the creative issues involved in what can only be described as a unique pipeline. Technically, Iloura were able to bring innovative solutions to the table and creatively they were able to crack the performance of the characters very early on in the piece".
Daniel Jeanette, Director of Animation, Where The Wild Things Are

ILOURA TO WORK ON MIRAMAX FEATURE FILM DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK

Melbourne based animation and VFX house Iloura have commenced work on Miramax Films’ Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.

The fantasy thriller, which began shooting in Melbourne Australia this week, stars Katie Holmes (Batman Begins), Guy Pearce (The Proposition, Memento) and nine-year-old Bailee Madison (Bridge to Terabithia). Based on a 1970s telefilm, the script was co-written by celebrated filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro (Hell Boy, Pan's Labyrinth, The Hobbit) and Matthew Robbins (Mimic) and is being directed by Del Toro’s protégé, Troy Nixey. Don’t be Afraid of the Dark is the story of a girl who moves in with her father and his new girlfriend only to discover devilish creatures are dwelling in the basement of the home.

Del Toro is producing alongside Mark Johnson (Chronicles of Narnia, The Notebook, Rain Man, Bugsy). William Horberg (Milk, Adventureland) is executive producer.

Iloura are working exclusively on the animation requirements for the film on approximately 180 shots, most of which involve character animation and integration of the creatures with live action footage.

" This is a wonderful project for the team at Iloura. The nature of the character animation work combined with the talent both in front of, and behind the camera presents one of the most exciting opportunities in the history of our company", says Simon Rosenthal, Executive Producer at Iloura. "We are incredibly pleased to be a part of this feature and look forward to realising the vision of all involved".

The Pacific

The team at iloura has been awarded another parcel of VFX shots on the HBO series ‘The Pacific’. Iloura commenced visual effects production on The Pacific in early 2008. The ten part mini series from the creators of Band Of Brothers, tells the intertwined story of 3 U.S. Marines during battle with the Japanese in WWII. Initially the team at iloura were engaged to assist with onset requirements and to produce a modest number of shots. However the production’s growing confidence in the team has resulted in the recent award of a substantial and complex visual effects package making iloura one of the main contributors to the VFX on this new series from HBO.

Australia - in the running for VFX Oscar!

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently announced the teams behind Australia, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Dark Knight, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Iron Man, Journey to the Centre of the Earth and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor are all in the running for Oscar nominations, in the Visual Effects category.

The VFX team on Australia was led by experienced supervisor Chris Godfrey, (ex-Animal Logic co-founder) with additional VFX supervision from Jamie Price (Lord of the Rings : The Two Towers, Time Machine, Enemy of the State). The team brought together a huge collection of predominately Australian VFX houses to deliver over 1450 shots for the period drama.
Melbourne based iloura and Sydney based Animal Logic were the two biggest single vendors. Other vendors included Rising Sun Pictures, FuelFX, PhotonVfx, Framestore, Evil Eye Pictures, Post Modern, Complete Post, The LaB, Hydraulx/Lola and several others including a "Home Bake" in house vfx team.

Iloura contributed over 180 VFX shots to the sweeping epic and the involvement was wide ranging; a number of scenes were straight forward but required fairly complex compositing work and an equal number of shots depicting the bombing of Darwin during WWII and its aftermath were particularly challenging. Both practical and CG pyro and smoke atmosphere were integrated with 3D CG of the badly damaged wharf, massive burning ships, the returning Sloop, CG Zero planes, 3D Darwin streetscapes and foreground plate photography.

The academy's Visual Effects branch members will view excerpts from each of the seven short-listed films and will then reveal Oscar nominees for all categories on January 22.
